I picked this charger up in 1997 for $400.00 and made it home just in time for the thing to break! It had a 318/904 combo in it and was all original and numbers matching all the way down to the full vinyl top and hubcaps on steel wheels. The interior was white and black and the car was yellow on the exterior. It was rust free, but everything needed attention as the owner had fixed hardly anything. I gutted the interior and pulled the car all apart, I replaced the front fender on the drivers side and primered the car grey. (I hate yellow) I then redid the interior with all black interior and put in racing buckets in place of the front bench, a grant steering wheel, mini guages and tach, came next. Then the B&M shifter. I got a good deal on a bunch of cool parts, I traded a .30-.30 rifle for a ralley guage cluster, hide-a-way headlight set up, a power bulge hood and a mess of other parts and they all were cleaned up and used. The engine lost a cylinder in 1998 and I ran across a 340/727 combo with only 20,000 miles on a complete rebuild. The price was right, FREE! and so I made the swap, whats even better, the engine and transmission had been rebuilt by my mother's boyfriend who was a master mechanic with a reputation for doing awesome work and using the best stuff! From 1998 until 2001 I ran the car in grey primer, in February of 2001 I stripped the car down and had it painted hemi street orange. I hated the '72 stripe kit, so I used a '71 stripe kit to get the bold stripes that I wanted. I tried to get just the plain blackout for the hood but they sent the R/T blackout so I used it, though I don't advertise it as a R/T(since it is not). I added the rear wing spoiler and the front spoiler and some new wheels and you see what you see now. It isn't a "proper" resoration but it is mine and I made it the way I wanted-isn't that what this hobbie is all about???

Thats cool, to each their own. I think we can both agree that classic muscle cars are the best no matter what make or model.
Parts
Starting a 72 charger. Need parts suppliers. Are there specialty catalogs for the 72 chargers I can pick up?
72 charger suppliers
The aftermarket for a long time has kind of ignored the 71 and up mopars, especially the b bodies. Now that the real popular stuff is harder to find, people are looking to the later model stuff. This has done wonders for the marketing of items for the later cars. You will find that most of the actual mechanical parts like engine and engine parts, electrical parts, radiators, brakes and things of this nature are ready and available in most auto parts stores as well as mail order catalogs such as summit racing and jegs. For stuff that is harder to find, I sometimes look to the paddock at www.paddockparts.com also a good place is laysons restorations at www.laysons.com I get parts from year one and multiple other places and if you have a subscription to a mopar oriented magazine like MOPAR MUSCLE or Mopar action, the list of suppliers are endless. I am not sure what they are doing about actual sheet metal, I thought that some of the ones I mentioned had some new stuff that was begenning to come out for the 71-74 chargers such as floor and trunk pans and maybe quarter panels, but I am not sure. I have seen some fiberglass parts such as hoods, front fenders and the like, but those are not always great from what I have heard, I have not used anything fiberglass so I have no experience with that. There are mopar junkyards, I believe one in oregon is called wildcat, I dealt with them and their inventory is huge! Also there is one in texas called texas acres, I have dealt with them before and they were good to me, this is where you can find original sheet metal. Craigslist is another option, here in my area there is always tons of mopar stuff. My suggestion is get a magazine subscription and you will see that there is no shortage any more. Just remember, although there are many parts that are interchangable between the 71-74 years of the charger (with some interior parts being interchangeable even with other b bodies like roadrunners and satellites) there are some parts that only change between perticular years. an example is the front fenders on a 71 and 72 charger are alike (except for the marker light set up) but in 73 and 74 the wheel well opening is different, it seems taller and the shape of the fender isn't quite the same. so make sure you check everything out before you buy and when in doubt you can always pick up a parts interchange book or contact the different companies or salvage yards, they usually have been asked questions on these subjects before. Good luck, hope your project turns out great!
No bumper repair required
The bumpers were in great condition when I bought the car.

nice ride
Love what you've done with the car. I also have 72 Charger SE (in the tear down stage). My dad bought the car in 72 off the showroom floor in Charlotte N.C. It was passed down to my older brother in 81', then to me in 85'. My dad stored it for about ten years, but when it started to leak fluids on his garage floors he almost sold it for $1500. However I convinced him to give it back to me so that I could restore it. The engine is not original It blew on a trip to Miss. and replaced with another 318 from a Plymouth Satellite. The body is in good shape but has black vinyl top(redone) that I'm not to happy with. Wasn't sure on how to go back with restoration but after reading your thread it's given me some good ideas. Any suggestions are welcome. Long live the "B" body. john

orange and black
car looks impressive in that orange and black paintjob, under the hood of the car is a massive engine with lot of power. I got some nice stuff came from jurid when I mod the car. I replaced the brake shoe coz of the squeaky noise.
