i'm lookin at geeting a 68 camaro. It needs a motor and tranny and i plan to fix the car up to. I part out some chevy trucks so right now i have on hand, a 454 from an 81 truck with 4-speed and a couple different 350 engines. I plan to rebuild whatever engine i decide to put in. Also i have a couple th350 transmsions. I would like an automatic car but i would consider a manual. I plan to build up an engine to put in the car. I hope to put stuff in like performance pistons, rods, heads, intake and possibly two carbs. I hope to get alot of horsepower! my question to you guys is, should i put a 454 in it? or just go with a 350. I plan to drive it fairly often on the street but i want it to have power and go fast. but then i also don't know if the 454 is a realistic idea? Any help? Another thing i was wonderin about is, will the th350 hold up to the job or do most guys put manuals in or a different tranny. If so, what would be a good tranny for it?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

hi
the 454 is usually a hog on gas although lots of torque
you can match up a 4 speed or if you like a 4 speed auto
which would be better for mileage.
the 350 turbos are usually great to run out of the box as they are if there in good shape, i would check that.
i have a 71 gmc with a 350 which i rebuilt and as i lived in a hilly country i needed the extra horsepower so i put extra goodies( intake, lumpier cam, roller rockers, fresh pistons with double roller chain) and got about 350 hp with around 400lbs of torque I went with the 4 spd i had in there but now have 4spd auto better for fuel mileage and still good power.
It all depends on what you want to use it for. Street racer, daily hauler, or just on cruise night. Once you know that that's a good starting point. also whats your budget? Hope this helps, any other questions email me at dvefnk@gmail.com

the mouse motor is a better choice for lower budgets. But there is nothing like hearing and seeing a big rat motor under the hood. Hot Rod magazine did an article (in 2010 don't remember the month) on taking a 454 just like yours and creating a 600 HP motor for about $2500. They re-used a lot of parts and skimped here and there. They got most of their power and money spent the on the heads. It would not be a motor you would want at the track a lot, but for cruise nights it would be perfect. Like Muscle Car Fan said... it really depends on what you want to use it for...

Keep us posted..
I am new to the forum,,, don't know if you can add images, but if you can I would say post them...

i think 454
Did you know that you can build your own electricity generating devices for very little money. These devices will produce free electricity that you can use to power your home. You might think I have lost my mind, but I have not, I am talking about using solar panels and wind turbines to power your home in a more environmentally friendly and green way
