I purchased my 1971 442 W-30 in June of 2009' Basically im living my lifelong dream as far as building
the car that I wanted as a kid. I come from a long line of family members that had worked for and owned Oldsmobiles all there lives. From the time I was a child my dad had owned between 12 and 15
1967-72 F-85 body cars,..I think 9 were true 442's. I fell in love with a comic Krass & Bernie comic
in Cartoons Magazine that had a guy named Mike that owned a 71 442 with fat tires, lots of chrome
giggle gas ect but Mike had not collected enough returnable bottles to put gas in the car to take it to the track and see what it would run. "Sound familiar"? Anyway I had been looking for a 68-72 car
this year but really doubted id ever be able to own a true Outside Air Induction W-30 car complete with
W-25 fiberglass hood,Wing, red inner fenders and ironic enough Viking Blue paint.
The car had been a sub 12 second drag car driven by Steve Snyder in Indiana and Illinois complete
with Strange axles,410 gears, air bags, drive shaft safety loop etc etc. Anyway the racer passed away
while the engine was at Shaker Racing in Indiana. One day this summer I got a phone call wanting to know if I was interested in a W-30 with a missing engine. After I picked my jaw off the floor and got the car home I pulled the 455 out of my 69 post coupe and started ordering parts from Mondello
out in CA. I went with Pro Street aluminum heads, roller rockers,Keith Black pistons,Competition cam
&lifters,Edelbrock parts galore and all the hitech brackets and billet machined pulleys.
A 8 quart Milidon oil pan & pump,10 inch TCI converter and I just left out more details then I added.
FYI if you go with roller rockers on a big block Olds your tall valve covers won't fit without going with
a MGM mini brake booster. Your high dollar chrome porcelain headers will be all kinds of fun right up against your stock starter and pretty close to your oil filter. So your going to end up with a oil filter
mounted on your inner fender just like the race car it use to be. LOL you will be moving a few brake lines as well because that preportioning valve will be up against your headers but it won't be any big deal because you will already have dropped about 20 grand anyway so why not go with the aftermarket. A late model Monte Carlo Steering gear box will cut that steering ratio down a third and it will feel nice with the Turner brake package. It's always nice to have a trunk full of new parts when you buy a car complete with new seat covers and a headliner. Honestly I was blessed that I happened to be looking for a car when the economy was in the toilet and a lot of nice cars are for sale online.
